Bierens is a law firm, founded in Veghel in 1952 by Frits Bierens, providing legal and managing services for global businesses and companies. It is specialized in the field of International Private Law that relates to the practices B2B (Business-to-Business) must observe in the collection of debts. When I was a young boy, I never intended to take over my dad’s firm, which he established in 1952. Of course I knew that he was a lawyer, but it was not quite clear to me what he did exactly. As a child, I was only interested in sports and super heroes. To be like Batman or Superman, that is what I wanted.Even while growing up and realising that I needed to make a living, the legal profession did not feature into my picture of the future. My father told his children that the Russians might be coming (we were in the middle of the Cold War) and that studying Dutch law would be useless as we would have to emigrate to the United States.So I decided, just like my brothers, to become a doctor. A good profession and always jobs available, both in the Netherlands and abroad. Unfortunately, because of the numerus clausus lottery system, I failed to get a place in medical school twice. I still did not understand why my father chose the legal profession. In fact, the last thing I wanted was to get stuck in mountains of files and law books. Surely that did not leave any room for entrepreneurship?As I could not continue to take part in the lottery for a place at medical school forever, I eventually went to study law. That is what happened in those days. My father recommended this second choice, because law studies are always useful, and this way I could potentially take over the firm. At the time, I was still unable to understand why my father wished to pass his firm over to the next generation.Now, about 30 years later, I see more and more similarities between my father’s vision and my own. Fighting for justice is in our DNA. I chose to specialise in debt recovery. Not until I had graduated from law school and received the first of my father’s debt recovery files on my desk, did I see the potential of the legal profession. In debt recovery matters, I could indulge my entrepreneurial spirit.After working with my father for ten years, I took over the helm of this family firm in 1995. Divorce, landlord and tenant disputes and criminal proceedings we have not handled for many years. From early 2000, this firm’s focus had fully moved to debt recovery matters; national and international, disputed and undisputed, extrajudicial and judicial. Nevertheless, my father’s mental legacy continues to inspire this firm. In 1952 the Bierens family set up their law practice in Veghel, an entrepreneurial town outside of Eindhoven. In the early days, Bierens Lawyers was still a local office that assisted companies and private individuals in the local area with their legal questions and conflicts. The law firm of that time helped clients in all conceivable areas such as criminal law, family law and entrepreneurial law.
